Seasonal Flu 2010-2011
Seasonal Flu 2010-2011
Cough and cold season is just around the corner, and may have already started for some of us. Now that the kids are back in school and the colder months are ahead of us, we tend to stay indoors, and have a higher chance of catching each others’ germs. One of the worst germs we face is the influenza (flu) virus. The best way to stay healthy this season is to prevent the flu by getting your flu shot. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season
Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine
The recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for the 2010-2011 season is that everyone 6 months and older should get immunized against the flu. Currently, manufacturers project as many as 160-165 million doses of flu vaccine to be produced this season. 30 million doses have already been distributed, so check with your healthcare provider or local pharmacy to receive you flu vaccine. The Flu vaccine is NOT recommended to those who have had a severe reaction to the flu vaccine in the past, are allergic to eggs, children younger than 6 months old, or anyone with a moderate to severe fever at the time of administration.
